hippodrome, now in disuse. The circuit now house the polo field and a
sand track for riding sports.
Park offers services and amenities to some 200,000 people living in
the immediate surrounds, and to the influx of outside visitors on
Saturdays and Sundays, when the Milanese, hungry for a bit of
greenery and peace and quiet, pour into the Park in their thousands.
Today the Park and adjacent gardens of
the Villa Reale open their c.800 hectares to the public in winter (October
to March) from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and in the summer (April to September)
from 7 a.m. to 8.30 p.m., providing a wide range of sports facilities
and amenities. Private vehicles are not allowed through the Park
weekends and holidays, but a special bicycle rental service at the
Cascina Bastia enables visitors to enjoy the full spread of the Park's
sports associations have taken up residence in the Park, including the
Monza Tennis Club in Via Boccaccio 3, with eight hard courts and three
indoor ones. The Santa Maria riding centre at the Vilia Mirabello
offers further opportunities for lessons in horse-riding and guided
tours round the Park. The Monza Polo Club, founded in 1984, has
already met with great success in making the sport popular, and has a
much-frequented polo school. The centre has three fields, ore hundred
horses and one hundred boxes. providing a complete and qualified range
of facilities to members and visitors alike.
a different key, the gentle green slopes of the 18-hole golf course
have been a big attraction :o visitors ever since the course first
opened in 1929. But the real crowd-pulling attraction of Monza's Park
is the Grand Prix racing centre. Built in 1922, Monza's race track is
both a celebration of the motor car and a monument to progress.
are three tracks - one for high-speed racing, with banked curves; one
track at road level, and one smaller track for minor events and night
racing. The track with restaurant and bar is open al! year round (entrance
tee), from 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., and then from 1.30 p.m. to 5.30
p.m.: the opening hours for the racing centre as a whole are the same
as for the Park itself.
The racing centre includes a
camping area with 600 places, and an Olympic-size swimming pool open
from June through to the end of August. Motoring fans can browse
through the superb collection of vintage cars and motorbikes at the
special exhibition, which includes an extensive photographic display.
